Season 5
Following the success of the World Cup Specials in the summer of 2010, the BBC commissioned Special 1 TV for a full season covering the 2010-11 season which began to air on BBC3 in the middle of October. In reality at this time - Jose, having led Inter Milan to a Champions League triumph and moved onto Real Madrid - being replaced at the San Siro by Rafa Benitez. Roy Hodgson replaced Rafa at Liverpool who had made an indifferent start to the season. All of this information is very relevant from the offset as the very first episode (#1) lays into Liverpool and Rafa ("The Cuckoo") even though he has now left! Wayne Rooney needs "the Tank" when asked to make positive remarks about them (understandable from the ex-Evertonian).
There is one other character that gets the brunt of the criticism straight away and that of course is Sven! In reality he had left the Ivory Coast following the World Cup and had now become manager of Championship team Leicester City. Jose will no doubt accuse Sven of his continual pimping throughout the season as we see right here as well from the off!
The second episode (#2) pretty much continues on with the same theme of Liverpool and the return of "Wayne's Word". Wayne ("The Boy") is seeing trying to renegotiate his Special 1 TV contract - at the time he was stalling on signing a new deal with Manchester United. There are more problems for Sven at Leicester but the question is will David Beckham be joining him there? There are even some subtle clues about "The Thing" and some sort of agreement between Mr Alex and Jose - this is not referred to again until the BetFair episodes on the next page. Ian Holloway (live from his farm!) comes onto the show with Blackpool now in the Premier Division.

#4 Under Pressure
|
In #3 Wayne Rooney having suffered an ankle injury is now in the U.S. Could he really be getting involved with Scientology along with Tom Cruise and even David Beckham?
In #4 the question is asked - what is the connection between boxer Audley Harrison and Chelsea's Didier Drogba? Cabbageman Capello returns and is questioned over England's recent defeat against France. Sven becomes an undercover reporter and fails miserably!

#5 The Future
|
#6 The Truth
|
#5 sees the return of Puppet Ronnie and a very interesting glimpse into a future set in 2035 with Jose still unbeaten at home! There is a call for a "Taxi for Voyeur" after Arsenal defeats against Spurs and Sporting Braga and caught on film doing a Robert De Niro impression. We also discover why Cabbageman is struggling to learn English.
#6 sees Sven trying to attack Jose with huge amounts of emails once again attacking the Special 1 - first for his sending off against Murcia and now in this episode following a horrendous five-goal defeat for Real against Barcelona. At his own one-reporter press conference, Sven manages to screw up Mourinho's quote about omelets and eggs! But which manager will not be able to resist temptation to call in to ridicule Jose after a cowboy style showdown? There is a brief mention of the fiasco of England's failed World Cup bid - but more of that in later episodes.

#8 Christmas Special
|
#7 aired in mid-December 2010 and the jokes begin to turn towards FIFA! A Wikileak reveals a secret source known as "The Love Bucket" and connected to Special 1 TV could be the reason why England's bid for the World Cup was compromised by the Russians! We then get Sepp from Switzerland calling in - yikes!
#8 sees a special guest in the studio - the Irish Santa currently residing in Ipswich! Many of the usual suspects call him with Santa letting rip at many of them including some old enemies such as Mick from Wolves and Mr Alex.

#9 Mid-Table Madness
|
#10 King Kenny Special
|
#9 sees 2011 start with more jibes at Liverpool and even referee Howard Webb! Jose reveals that 2010 was another special year for the Special 1 by topping the best club coach list. Is the new sacking area in the mid-table? With the transfer window open - Jose reveals what could possibly be on offer (with Sven modelling). Even the Vengy's in Blackburn call in! Will any buy "The Cesc"? and is The Voyeur upset that it is even mentioned? "Roy - formerly of Ipswich" gives his opinions. Sven falls out with Becks!
#10 and "Woy" Hodgson's short reign in charge at Liverpool has come to an end and his replacement is a legend from yesteryear. Could Diego Maradona be heading for Blackburn Rovers? We see footage of him meeting members of the board (I think!) It was also nice to hear Harry Redknapp keeping David Beckham busy in unexpected ways whilst using the Spurs training facilities! |
#11 Arry's Bargain Bin
|
12 Sven Sacked
|
#11 Wayne goes to visit West Ham manager - the vampire Avram, due to actions of his chairman at Upton Park sparking a response from the S.P.C.M. (Society of Prevention of Cruelty to Managers). Wayne also starts a new campaign to "Save Robbie" seeing as the Irishman is spending too much time on the bench. Jose pushes The Voyeur over the edge!
#12 opens with the news that Sven has been sacked! Seeing as the relationship between Sven and Jose on the show had nearly always been volatile since the very first season - was this really a shock? But then we see the reasons how Sven had the final nail banged into his coffin. This coincided in reality in the firing of Andy Gray from Sky and mimicked what happened to him (to an extent).

#14 Just Like That
|
#13 The Cabbage Capello replaced Sven and gets off to a bad start with his new item "Footballer's Tweets". Wayne is given a free role as Cabbage is warned not to tinker as he had done last summer. The mad transfer world that saw last minute moves for both Andy Carroll to Liverpool also saw Fernando Torres referred to as a "Pot Noodle" by Jose for the first time after moving to Chelsea. Could Vinnie Jones be remaking "Escape to Victory" with fellow footballers David Beckham, Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney to take on some of the roles?
Robbie Keane joins Avram Grant in the coffin for a West Ham press conference.
#14 The Voyeur come under scrutiny yet again - this time after in reality The Gunners blew a four-goal advantage at Newcastle. With Sven gone and Jose refusing to even talk about him, things go from bad to worse for his replacement Cabbage Capello - so much so that even Mr Alex starts agreeing with Arsene! Now Mick McCarthy joins Avram in the coffin with Wigan manager Roberto Martinez also referred to.

#15 Act of God

#16 Nine Special Years
|
#15 Jose goes to watch Fulham play Chelsea but is recognised by fans and even Big Boss above him in his helicopter. Following Arsenal's Champions League win over Barcelona, Jose talks to the Voyeur but refers to him by his real name and acts very civilly towards him leaving Arsene highly suspicious. Jose also talks to many members of the Chelsea team and then to Harry Redknapp regarding the Genaro Gatusso incident in the San Siro against Spurs and in particular Joe Jordan. We get a glimpse inside the Manchester United dressing room at half time against Manchester City - Mr Alex has definitely moved on from the hair dryer to bigger and sharper things! Perhaps it was this threat that prompted Wayne into scoring one of the goals of the season with a bicycle kick - or did Jose have something to do with it? Right at the end of the show (even past the end credits) Jose finally succumbs to the realisation that something in the show needs to change.
#16 Jose reaches 9 years unbeaten at home - and continues to be nice to Arsene! Wayne's special report sees him interview Sven who talks about life since leaving Special 1 TV - Jose is not happy and when Cabbage fires in some more terrible Footballer's Tweets, Jose orders his team into the boardroom for an Apprentice style firing as Jose turns into Alan Sugar.

#17 Two Becomes Three
#17 After the firing of the Cabbage, Jose will be introducing a new member to his team - the countdown clock is ticking at the press conference. Elsewhere - Ashley Cole has been in the news for accidentally shooting a student with an air rifle at Chelsea's training ground - hence Wayne's extra protective kit! Fresh from Birmingham City's League Cup final victory over Arsenal, Alex McLeish is a guest on the show with a little help from The Who! It appears that the new signing as not shown up in time - but after the end credits we finally see who it is!
#18 An Audience with Wenger
|
#19 Champions League Special
|
#18 A new era of Special 1 TV kicks off with the new member of the team Arsene "The Voyeur" Wenger and a *live* show with many regulars in the audience and Arsene making a great debut impressing both Jose and in particular Wayne. One member of the audience though is not a happy bunny and causes a scene right at the end.
#19 Arsene continues to impress - even making a comparison between David Luiz and Sideshow Bob from "The Simpsons". We are some opinions from regular callers and even hear from Sven. Mick McCarthy then presents a fashion show with Jose, Arsene, Wayne and Puppet Ronnie doing the modeling. The draw for the Champions League Quarter Finals appears and pits Jose against "Arry" and Spurs whilst Chelsea are drawn against Mr Alex.

#20 Wenger in Wales
|
#21 Sven FM
|
#20 In this "Euro 2012 Qualifying Special" - Arsene is sent to Wales as England are the visitors (who would have thought just 4 years later where they would next meet!) He is joined there by Wayne, Cabbage and Peter Crouch (sort of!) The Gunners players are falling like flies as far as availability for this match is concerned. We get an advertisement for "The SAF Phone" - an old style phone recently seen used by Mr Alex whilst banned from the dugout. Mr Alex criticizes the signing of Wenger to Special 1 TV. Back in Wales and the Arsene's report turns into a mess after talking to Sven. JT and Rio then both attack Wayne wanting to know which side he is on. This is in reference to John Terry and his "alleged" racial words caught on camera towards Anton Ferdinand when Chelsea recently played QPR.
#21 We finally find out more about what Sven has been up to since being fired from the show as we are introduced to Sven FM and his new radio show "Fox in the Box". Fabio refers back to a book that we first saw him using when the show was still on Setanta Sports - "Stevie G's 100 words for Gaffers". We see how close Jose came to being the England manager back in 2007. Sven gets a "deluded lunatic" calling in on his show - and it is not Dave from Newcastle!

#22 Wayne Banned
|
#23 Through the Keyhole
|
#22 Back in reality - the first Manchester United game in April saw them travel to West Ham and go 2-0 down. They recover to win 4-2 with Wayne Rooney scoring a hat-trick. Following his third goal, Wayne is seen swearing directly towards a camera near the corner flag as he celebrates with team mates. The footage is then used by the FA to give Wayne a two-match ban. These actual events explain the set-up for this next episode and explain Wayne's absence from the studio. Chelsea's "Pot Noodle" suffers a statue joke coming at in his direction and Jose is seen spying on Arry's Spurs dressing room and maybe gives Peter Crouch an idea (Crouch was sent off in the actual match against Real for a sliding tackle). Sven FM returns with a very special guest and an exclusive interview.
#23 Pot Noodle Fernando Torres continues to be the subject of many one-liners and only has Spiderman Rafa still supporting him. Arsenal's major shareholder Stan Kroenke has promised manager Arsene Wenger a £40 million transfer fund - something that Jose jokes about with Wenger in the show. It appears everybody is trying to tap up a certain England striker - currently taking time off and relaxing with a karaoke machine singing Pot Noodle songs! Side note - like the Sven bandanna!

#24 Wayne's Redemption
|
|
#24 Wayne is back but now Arsene is banned! - starting the period of his meltdown phase. Jose celebrates Real's Copa Del Rey victory against arch enemies Barcelona. Also note the damaged Copa Del Rey trophy besides Jose - this was after it was dropped by Sergio Ramos off of the side of the open top bus and went under the wheels! That actual incident has also been added (above - right) and you can actually see the trophy going down and under from around the 8 second mark. Arsene's suspension follows his confrontation on the touchline with Kenny Dalglish following the Gunners defeat against Liverpool. Kenny and Mr Alex get into a spat on the phones whilst Sven calls in!
#25 Match of the Century
|
#26 Conspiracy at the Nou Camp
|
#25 Prince William is getting married at Westminster Abbey - Wayne is there with live updates! The Arsene meltdown continues to pick up steam and Sven has a special guest - Jose! (so he thinks).
#26 With just 3 episodes remaining - perhaps this episode signifies the beginning of the end! It feels like a run-up to end of season soap cliff-hanger as the amount of plots, villains and melt downs continues to increase. This is one of my personal favourite clips - the FIFA accusations and conspiracy theory are fantastic!

#27 Pariah
#27 So now Jose himself is no longer able to appear on Special 1 TV in the studio! Arsene reaches the end of the road as far as Arsenal's title chances are concerned as Mr Alex is on the phone celebrating another trophy. Sven is instigating the search for Jose whilst Jose struggles with Wayne allowing Johan in Barcelona to call him and referring to Jose as "a translator". By the end Sven with the Powers that Be of FIFA appear to have found Jose with the line "We got him" being used similarly to the Bin Laden alleged capture.
#28 All In
#28 Despite Jose's plight in the previous episode - he is back in the studio for this final episode of the season. Sven is getting himself into a pickle of his own creation again - and I am not talking about Jedward! With the seasons Champions League final looming between Manchester United and Barcelona, Jose wagers the future of the entire show on United winning the trophy. If you think about it this is a rather poignant moment as of course United did lose and Special 1 TV never did return to the BBC. Who really knows why! Did the BBC simply choose not to renew it or did Marcus Rosenstock decide that he had had enough? Those are just two possibilities.
Apart from a final message (below) for DoItChampions - the YouTube channel created to host all of the episodes - the show was finished. That was until two whole years later and the Spring of 2013. Special 1 TV then returned in conjunction with BetFair and those episodes plus a few "extras" are covered on the Season 6 page.
